God's Good News For You

The Bible tells us how we can have eternal life through Christ. In fact,  (John 5:13) says, "I write this to you... so that you may KNOW you have eternal life." The plan is simple. Here's what the Bible says...

God loves you. (John 3:16) says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." This is the central message of the Bible. God knows your every thought, every motive, every action, good or bad. Yet he still loves you.

(2 Peter 3:9) tells us, "God is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." The reason he desires that everyone should repent is because...

We are all sinners. "For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard" (Romans 3:23). God's standard is Jesus, who is without sin. However, none of us can claim to have no sin. You and I did not become sinners the first time we did something wrong. We sin because it is our nature.

Sin is breaking God's law and can include lust, greed, cheating, lying, evil thoughts, hatred, and much more. Because of this, it is impossible to earn or even deserve eternal life. You would have to be perfect to earn it on your own.

The Bible teaches that there is penalty to pay for our sin...

Just as there are consequences to pay for breaking man's law, there is a penalty to pay for breaking God's law. (Romans 6:23) says, "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus." Death, in this case, is separation from the presence of God.

The law of God demands a perfect sacrifice for sin. Sin's penalty must be paid, but you cannot pay it because you are not perfect. This creates a great problem for us. God loves you and desires a personal relationship with you, but sin has created a barrier between you and God. God solved this problem through... Jesus' death.

Since you and I are not able to pay the penalty for our own sin, God sent Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, to die on the cross for you. "But God demonstrated his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died FOR us" (Romans 5:8). God hates sin, but because of his love for us, he placed all the sins of the world on his Son - "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21).

That's right, Jesus died in your place. He paid the penalty for your sin. Since he was the perfect sacrifice for sin, he was able to break the sin barrier that stood between you and God. Now God offers to you the free gift of eternal life.

Faith is the key. The only way you can receive the gift of eternal life is by faith. (Ephesians 2:8-9) tells us, "For it is by grace (getting something you don't deserve) that you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."

Faith is not mere intellectual knowledge of Jesus - acknowledging that there is a God.  Faith is not mere historical knowledge of Jesus - believing in Jesus as a figure in history in much the same way a person believes in George Washington or Abraham Lincoln.  Faith is not mere temporal assent - trusting in God for temporary things. For example: "My baby was sick, I prayed, God healed my baby, therefore, I am a Christian."

Saving faith is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life. Living a good life is not enough, going to church is not enough, being baptized is not enough. It means that you trust completely in Jesus and his faithfulness to you, not your faithfulness to him. "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31). There are no other conditions added in this verse.

If you would like to have a personal relationship with God, you can right now. (Romans 10:9-10) says, "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."

Simply pray and ask Jesus to come into your life. Here's a suggested prayer you can pray... "Dear Lord Jesus, I know that you love me even though I am a sinner. I believe that you died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin. I need you in my life. I ask you to forgive me of my sin, come into my life, and take control of my life. I place my trust in you alone. Help me to live for you and serve you. Thank you for giving me eternal life."

If you prayed sincerely, you are now a child of God. (John 1:12) says, "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."
